Es obvio que las depresiones provocadas por tragedias no se pueden prevenir, ni tratar más allá de mitigar los síntomas mientras duren.

Sin embargo, otras depresiones, a veces muy agudas, surgen sin causas objetivas que las justifiquen, o por lo menos no hasta niveles tan agudos, cuando el único problema real son las pequeñas frustraciones de la vida cotidiana. Para prevenir las depresiones de esta última clase, hay una serie de consejos prácticos que bastante gente conoce, como por ejemplo relajarse, distraerse y dormir lo suficiente.

Ahora, a juzgar por las conclusiones de una nueva investigación, hay que añadir un nuevo consejo a esa lista: Seguir una dieta equilibrada.

Una dieta saludable puede reducir el riesgo de depresión severa, según los resultados de un estudio sobre más de 2.000 personas realizado en la Universidad de Finlandia Oriental por Anu Ruusunen, nutricionista clínica.

Adicionalmente, la pérdida de peso en el contexto de un cambio positivo de estilo de vida (adoptando hábitos más sanos, entre ellos seguir una dieta equilibrada) se asoció con una reducción en los síntomas depresivos.

El estudio refuerza la hipótesis de que una dieta sana puede ser capaz de ayudar a mitigar la depresión y también a prevenir su aparición.

Los individuos deprimidos a menudo siguen una dieta de mala calidad y poco nutritiva, como parte del proceso derrotista y de abandono en el que se hunden. La situación puede resultar un círculo vicioso para aquellas personas que cuando se deprimen pierden el apetito.

Otras personas cuando están deprimidas se refugian en los alimentos sabrosos, ricos en grasas y calorías, a modo de consuelo.

En la nueva investigación, una dieta sana, caracterizada por verdura, fruta, cereales integrales, carne avícola, pescado y queso bajo en grasa, se asoció con una baja incidencia de síntomas depresivos y un menor riesgo de depresión durante el periodo de seguimiento a los sujetos de estudio.

El aumento de la ingestión de folato también se asoció con un riesgo menor de sufrir depresión. Entre los tipos de alimentos con mayor contenido de folato figuran la verdura y la fruta.
